One of my professors really got my wheels turning the other day. He is my sociology professor, and the topic was love. He asked the class, “how do you know when you’re in love with someone?” A majority of us looked around at each other, waiting for someone else to lead the discussion. Then the professor said “is it a feeling inside, or is it something you decide?” My classmates were really reluctant to answer. I’m sure we all have our own experiences and opinions when it comes to love.
The lesson was about sociological paradigms. He used the concept of being in love as an example for how people define a certain situation. My professor said we develop our own circumstances for being in love. Once someone fills our description/expectations, we define the situation as love. Upon this decision, we look at this person completely different than ever before.
To me, it’s not just a decision. If loving someone was up to decision, then we would be able to decide to stop loving him/her. Clearly, there are many broken hearts out there. If love was a choice, they probably wouldn’t be suffering. From experience, I can say that falling out of love is not something you can evoke.
To me, love is the most powerful thing in the world. The love between parents and their children, husband and wife, boyfriend and girlfriend, and even the love shared between friends is life changing. Love is trusting each other and learning together. It’s sticking with each other through the good times, and the bad. Love is having patience, and understanding that neither of you are perfect. It is the greatest gift you can give.
“If theres a tomorrow when we’re not together, theres something you, must always remember. you’re braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think. but the most important thing is even if we’re apart, ill always be with you.” –Winnie The Pooh
“It’s been said that there’s one word that will free us from the weight and the pain of life. And that word is love. And I believe that. That doesn’t mean that it hasn’t been hard, or that it won’t be. It just means that I’ve found a stillness and a bravery in myself when I’m with you. You make me brave. And I will love you until the end of time.” -Unknown
“Love is a funny thing. it’s an intensely personal yet universal thing. It has a thousand definitions and not one of them gets it exactly right. It’s a feeling. It’s an experience. it’s inside of us and yet elusive. We desire it yet fear it. It’s the central experience of our lives and yet it remains a mystery.”-Unknown
“We all want to fall in love. why? because that experience makes us feel completely alive, where every sense is heightened, every emotion is magnified, our everyday reality is shattered and we’re flying into the heavens. it may only last a moment, an hour, an afternoon, but that doesn’t diminish its value cause we’re left with memories that we’ll treasure for the rest of our life.”-Unknown
“Ever since I was young, I never understood anything about the world and anything that happened in my life. The only thing that ever made sense was you and how I felt about you. That’s all I’ve ever known, and that’s enough. that’s enough for the rest of my life.”- Boy Meets World
In my opinion, love is open to interpretation. Each person defines it differently, because they experience it in their own unique way. Don’t let someone else define love for you. What does love mean to you?
